Canada’s Express Entry Now Prioritizes Skilled Trades: Are You Eligible?

Published: May 14, 2025

Canada has recently revamped its Express Entry system to place a stronger emphasis on skilled
trades professionals. This strategic shift aims to address labor shortages in critical sectors and
offers new opportunities for tradespeople seeking permanent residency.

Expanded List of Eligible Trades Occupations

As of February 27, 2025, IRCC has updated the Trade category within the Express Entry system.

The category now includes 25 occupations, with 19 new additions. These include:

  • Bricklayers, Cabinetmakers, Carpenters, Concrete Finishers, Construction Estimators
  • Construction Managers, Millwrights, Oil and Gas Drilling Supervisors
  • Cooks, Electricians, HVAC Technicians, Plumbers, Welders, Roofers, and more

Eligibility Criteria for the Trade Category
To qualify, candidates must:

  • Have at least six months of full-time work experience in one of the listed trades in the last three
    years
  • Be eligible under one of the Express Entry streams (FSWP, FSTP, CEC)
  • Match NOC lead statements and duties for their occupation

Benefits of the Updated Trade Category

  • Lower CRS score cut-offs: historically 433-436 vs. 524-549 in general draws
  • More targeted Invitations to Apply (ITAs)
  • Helps meet Canada’s growing demand for trades professionals
