Express Entry’s new Education category draw for Express Entry 2025

Published: May 12, 2025

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a significant update to the Express Entry system, now prioritizing candidates with experience in the education sector. This move aims to address the growing demand for qualified educators across Canada.

Introduction to the New Education Category

On February 27, 2025, IRCC announced the addition of a new category within the Express Entry system, focusing on education professionals. This category-based selection is designed to attract skilled individuals in specific occupations critical to Canada’s labor market needs.

Eligible Occupations

The following occupations are included under the new education category:

  • Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants (NOC 43100)
  • Instructors of persons with disabilities (NOC 42203)
  • Early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 42202)
  • Elementary school and kindergarten teachers (NOC 41221)
  • Secondary school teachers (NOC 41220)

To be eligible, candidates must have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in one of these occupations within the past three years, either in Canada or abroad.

First Education Category-Based Draw Details

IRCC conducted its first draw for the education category on May 1, 2025, issuing 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required was 479. Candidates needed to have created their Express Entry profiles before 10:35 a.m. UTC on August 10, 2024.

Sample Candidate Profiles

To illustrate the type of candidates who received ITAs in this draw, here are three fictional examples:

1. Neha Verma

  • Age: 26
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education (India) + 2-year Canadian diploma in Educational Support
  • Canadian Work Experience: 2 years as an educational assistant
  • Language Proficiency: CLB 9 in English
  • CRS Score: 480

Christina’s combination of Canadian education and work experience, along with strong language skills, positioned her well for the education category draw.

2. Daniel Okafor

  • Age: 29
  • Education: Bachelor’s in Science + Master’s in Education (Nigeria)
  • Foreign Work Experience: 3 years as a secondary school teacher
  • Language Proficiency: CLB 10 in English
  • CRS Score: 481

Despite lacking Canadian experience, Akram’s advanced education and high language proficiency made him a strong candidate. Note: Teaching is a regulated profession in Canada, and Akram would need to obtain provincial certification to work as a teacher.

3. Lucia Hernandez

  • Age: 28
  • Education: Bachelor’s in Social Work (Mexico) + 2-year Canadian diploma in Disability and Community Support
  • Foreign Work Experience: 3 years
  • Language Proficiency: CLB 9 in English
  • Spouse’s Credentials: Master’s degree, CLB 10 in English, 1 year of Canadian work experience
  • CRS Score: 485

Simone’s profile, combined with her spouse’s qualifications, contributed to a competitive CRS score, leading to an ITA in the education category draw.
