What is International Experience Canada Program?
International Experience Canada (IEC) program provides opportunity to prospective workers from specific countries, to come and work in Canada. Foreign nationals, who are citizen of countries having agreement with Canada under International Experience Canada (IEC) program can apply for work permit in any of the three available programs offered by IEC, without needing a LMIA. Under International Experience Canada (IEC) program, a foreign worker can stay in Canada for maximum period of 1 year. IEC work permits are based on random draw system, where applicants are placed in one or more pools of International Experience Canada (IEC) candidates. Following are three streams of IEC:
Working Holiday Visa
Under Working holiday visa, applicants are given opportunity to travel as well as work in Canada by making them eligible to apply for an open work permit, which allows them to work anywhere with any employer, which helps them in financing their holiday in Canada.
Young Professionals
Under Young Professionals stream, applicants are given opportunity of career development, by making them eligible to apply for an employer-specific work permit, which eventually helps them gain professional work experience in Canada.
International Co-op
Under International Co-op program, students are given opportunity for undertaking internships in Canada. Students are issued an employer-specific work permit which enables them to gain practical and valuable experience in their field of study by doing internships.
Working Holiday Visa
Applicant requirement
Working Holiday visa has following eligibility requirements:
- An applicant need not have a job offer from a Canadian employer
- An applicant can work for any employer he wishes.
- An applicant can work in multiple provinces while exploring Canada.
- It is advantageous for those who want to earn money while travelling.
- Each country with whom Canada has an agreement has definite quota, based on which applicants are chosen from a random draw.
Young Professionals
Applicant requirement
Young Professionals stream enables foreign nationals to gain Canada work experience by giving employer-specific work permit. Under this work permit, an applicant can work for a specific employer, which will be explicitly mentioned in applicant’s work permit. It is beneficial for:
- Applicants looking for Canadian work experience under a specific employer in a specific field.
- Applicants who intend to work for the same employer in the same location while in Canada.
- Applicants who want paid jobs.
- Applicants interested in doing NOC Skill Level 0, A, or B jobs.
- Each country with whom Canada has an agreement has definite quota, based on which applicants are chosen from a random draw.
International Co-op
Applicant requirement
The International Co-op Internship program allows international students to complete either an internship or a work placement in Canada, for completion of their post-secondary education. Under this stream, a job offer is required to receive an employer-specific work permit, which means students can work for only one employer at one location in Canada. It is good for following students:
- International students who are registered at any designated post-secondary institution.
- Students who have a job offer from a specific employer for a work placement or internship in Canada.
- Students who require a work placement or internship to complete their studies
- Students who are ready to work for only one employer at one location in Canada.
